Surprise and Balance Bills

A bill you weren’t expecting is not always a bill you owe. Your employer or health plan works with us so we can help you check before you pay.

We work with your health plan and handle the application for you.

If you qualify, the hospital lowers what you owe, even with insurance. Checking costs nothing.

What is a balance bill?

A balance bill is when a hospital or doctor bills you for the difference between what they charged and what your insurance paid. You may not owe it. Some balance bills are sent in error, and some arrive while the claim is still being worked out.

I got a bill I wasn’t expecting. Do I have to pay it right away?

No. A bill in the mail is not the final word. Wait to pay until you have talked with us or your HR team. If the claim is still being reviewed, the amount may change. If the bill is wrong, we work to get it corrected.

What should I do?

  1. Take a breath. Bills like this are common, and we know how to help.
  2. Hold off on paying. Paying first can make a wrong bill harder to fix.
  3. Call us. (800) 399-0180, or request a call and we will reach out to you.
  4. Send us the bill when we ask. We take it from there.

What happens after I contact you?

We check the bill against your insurance and the claim. If something is wrong, we work with your health plan and the hospital to correct it, and we deal with the hospital so you do not have to. We keep you updated along the way.

Will this cost me anything?

No. Our help is part of how your health plan looks after its members. You will never get a bill from Highlight Health.
